POET’S BIO:
A Rhode Island resident, I have lived most of my life in New England near the coast. The ocean has always been in important part of my life, a place of refuge and beauty. My poetry efforts began some years ago in college, with several works appearing in the school literary magazine. Life's pace somehow managed to side track my writing and creative side for many years. Then a few years ago I discovered my artistic side again. First, in my love of sandsculpture, as I mentioned before, the ocean is part of my essence. Then I rediscovered my joy of writing poetry, a small way in which I can share the other side of who I am. For those poets and writers starting out, asking themselves if the effort is worth it, I say yes, do not let life dissuade you from pursuing your goals. Thank you for reading and I hope enjoying my poetry.

Missing

Echoes of footsteps falling,
Resounding about unheard,
Like a leafless tree,
Or an unseen smile,
The hollowness hangs
Suspended in the air,
Laughter with no one to hear.
Whispers wander about,
No home found,
They wither and languish,
As rest escapes them.
Facing the night alone,
Wondering aloud,
How the pathway found this place.
What destiny brought them here.
A time of total solitude and emptiness.
Pedestal dreams tossed asunder.
Has so much changed?
Did the souls of yesterday
Vanish in a moment,
Or was the journey
Merely an accumulation of
Countless misdeeds?
So cold the touch,
So lifeless!
Herculean in its perfunctory nature,
Devoid of any feeling.
They walk the road in silence.
Drifting toward a destination
No longer known or wanted.
Merely that something once held
High in a dream,
Now forever...
Missing.

Warmth of Arms

Sweet repose in an embrace.
Tenderness soft as the petals
Of the freshly opened rose.
Touchstone of the soul,
These arms whose strength
Lies within a heart so rich with love,
No hurt could pass beyond them.
Body warmth penetrates
Deep to the soul,
Enriching life with every touch.
Gentle the power that flows here.
In word and touch shelter is known.
Encouragement when doubt haunts
Skulking as she does so often
In the dark corners of our fears.
Fending off the pain even when no words pass,
For even in silence the magic of these arms
Harbors the heart from travail.
Wondering how it can be
Held so close the breathing is in unison,
Yet no questions of self exist.
Scared garden where in the only footsteps found
Are those left of love.
Listening to the sound
Of the heart beating,
It plays a soft soothing song,
Wishing time was forever banished
Hoping the embrace eternal,
Slowly they draw back
As they know they must.
Eyes once again drawn together,
Looking deeply, longingly,
Mirrored before each other their souls reflect back.
Lips soft and warm draw together
Tasting the joy of love,
They embrace once more,
Becoming one heart again.

Our Shared Pains

Shared pain is supposed to be less,
Hurt wrapped by another's love,
Is hurt all the same.
Knowing that your sorrow
Holds onto your soul
With a blind relentless pursuit,
Does not dissuade this heart
From its journey.
The sound of following footsteps
Echoing upon the path you walk,
Need not be a cause of fear,
There is no malice within.
It can be hard to see light,
When so much is covered in dark.
The effort just to breath so large.
Vision clouded by endless tears.
The only sound is the crying.
Shared pains still hurt,
They cut and shred our hearts
With equal ferocity!
But open arms are just that.
They reach out into the night,
Knowing that a simple touch,
Even if only for a moment,
Can hold off despair.
And in that briefest of moments,
The memory of hope will live.
Tiny though its seed may seem,
Nourished with love,
It will bring the broken heart back.
The will be steps many,
The time long and hard.
Shared pains may linger
But they shall not last.
Lost within another,
It is the magic of
The power of the heart

Light of My Heart

Light of my heart,
Shine upon me
Bring warmth to the dark.
Teach me the joy of surrender,
Freedom from the chaos.
Show me love
In the face of pain.
Affection so pure
It elegantly completes all.
Even the smallest gesture
Rises majestically with care.
A soul's magic
Can bring meaning to life,
When the path seems
Lost to desperation.
Can the words be found,
Whose meanings share
What the heart holds dearest?
This gentlest of touches
Convey all the unspoken thoughts?
Will the memories of this embrace
Live long past the time
The warmth of two bodies as one?
Can the vision of this love
Show your heart the life it longs for so,
Will the bond forged break time's shackles
Showing that forever's soul
Is found in the soft eyes
That are the doorway to your soul.
Light of my heart,
In you will these answers
Find love's serenty and peace?

Fountain of Youth

It can be found in her smile.
Brightness in soft blue eyes,
Penetrating so easily to the soul.
No need for words at all
When a touch speaks to the heart.
The brush of a hand upon my arm,
Barely perceptible pressure,
Yet as piercing as the sharpest blade.
Its edge is passion
Finding keenness in her love.
Embrace of time eternal
Captures all your fears,
Casting them effortlessly aside.
No match they
When measured against
The power of her heart.
Its strength unbounded
By the fears of the darkness.
Light of love,
Gather my weakness as one,
Teaching strength from compassion.
Showing gentle peace
In all she feels and does.
Fold back the ages,
My fountain of youth,
Stand here and hold my heart,
Let time stand still,
Yesterday's be forgotten
This nearness fulfills all,
Even if now only in this dream.

Dark Mistress

Dark mistress walk this blackness with me.
Companion with no feelings guide each step,
Down this path whose indigo shaded walls
Hide both shadow and non-shadow.
Shield the heart from pain, from expression,
Wrapping all in a field of emptiness,
Let your cold lifeless fingers take mine,
Painful viselike grasp holds no fear here.
There in your callous embrace no hurt can pass,
No trespass escapes the calculating revenge
That fills your heartless world with its sole purpose.
Push back the light, its illuminations mere falsehoods.
Deep here in this quiet hollow place is peace.
A place of only straight lines of thought.
No diversions, no confusions.
Only the demands of the mistress,
Commanding the night to move forever forward.
Dark, cold, and ever quiet

Continuity

The candle and wick intimately entwined.
Touched gently with fire a flame comes to life.
Mingling with strand and wax it warms the air.
Its brilliance radiates out seamlessly
Seen at once flame, candle, and light in unison.
Continuity of form and function a union of perfection.
The candle of love seeks perfection in life.
The light of the soul finds the heart
The heart seeks the flame of love,
Searching for the brilliance it can bring.
Reaching beyond self like the wick's light,
Searching for completeness in the eyes of another.
Continuity of time treasured in the union of hearts.
Two souls joined seamlessly, effortlessly,
By the quintessential human emotion,
The completion of one by another,
Candle, wick, flame, and light,
Soul, Heart, Love, and Life.

The Hard Times

They come without mercy,
Snowballing down upon us
Gathering a momentum all their own.
The cascading avalanche life throws at us.
It comes in many forms from many sides.
Never showing mercy, its pressure relentless.
We struggle sometimes to find the gaps,
Those all too brief moments of peace.
Wondering why it seems so often the scales
Tip so far to the maelstrom and not to the calm.
Knowing that we all fight the battles is no solace.
It is hard to see past the walls when in the fight.
Harder still to see the heart that reaches out,
Does the cold seem less so when shared?
When the hard times beat down upon you
Will you feel the warmth from these prayers,
As the embrace and wrap around your world?
Can hopes and love overcome distance and time?
The answers are found drifting on tomorrow's winds.
For now, the fires burn, the struggle reigns high.
The pain and stresses push past reason,
Instilling fear and discord.
Remember the night cannot last forever,
Tomorrow's come one after another,
And in that find faith to reach beyond all this.
When you look into your heart,
Find the love of those who care,
Let it guide your thoughts and hopes,
Let it warm your soul
And bring light to all your days.

Chasing Expectations

They lead us on so, as we blindly dash into the imagined dreams,
With little regard for what feelings lay before them,
Should they somehow once again fail to live up to hopes.
It is the risk run when chasing expectations,
Never knowing what is around the coming corner.
History would be a better guide if we could but listen to her story.
But dreams are always so full of grander thoughts,
That a turned back and closed mind leads us on merrily.
Reckoning comes of course as it always must.
A day when what was to be is not.
Life's complexities so quickly finding a way as it seems so often
To stomp down anticipation with a fury so intense it borders on ruthless.
There are reasons always, countless and real, fate being what it is.
The path of hearts has little consequence in her much larger world.
And in an empty moment, when the silence haunts completely,
The doubts and questions creep in stealing away the soul.
They take hold of our dark corners and fester,
Like the clouds before the storm they grow,
Covering all with a chilling, numbing, cold.
The cost of chasing expectations is often high,
Sorrow, lost dreams, sleepless nights, and midnight tears,
The price for not chasing expectations is often higher.

In Your Arms

In your arms, serenity lays claim to my heart,
The peaceful embrace of your warm body near;
Do you feel this, the joy, the contentment that fills me so?
What miracle this, that a touch could quell my fears?
That a smile can show me peace?
The wonder of each moment wraps around me
Like the stars fill the heavens,
Infinite in splendor, painting the expanse of all with love.
In your arms, could I want for anything else?
Is the beating of our two hearts so fulfilling?
Oh yes it is that and more!
No place else knows this sweet ambrosia,
Nectar of my soul, poured to you
With all that my soul can give,
Drink slowly of this cup my precious love,
Time steals the hours like minutes,
But in your arms, there is peace,
In your arms there is joy,
In your arms I know love.

The Setting Sun

The setting sun has called to me,
Soon shall I find some rest,
night's window closes slowly,
These thoughts dwell in my breast,

Thou the miles hold us far
Your voice I still can hear,
And so my heart still smiles,
As if you were still near.

So if a song slips from me,
Sung sweet and soft and low,
This joy inside my soul,
Is there for all to know.

So rest in silent moments
Feel my heart by you.
In my mind you shall be,
Until this journey's through.

Perhaps a distant future night,
These thoughts will be less clear,
By now sleep oh so gently,
With peace and love my dear.

But if my arms shall find you
Our lips, they shall caress,
In the harbor of my heart,
Your soul will find some rest.

If tender moments call you,
And sunset sings you name,
Look slowly in your heart,
And there I shall remain.

Safely deep within your soul,
There too I will know love,
Together onward we will go,
My precious evening dove.

Comments

A void must be crossed,
a bridge,
from life to death.
Or perhaps, death to life,
it all seems quite relative to me.
Nevertheless,
We all must traverse it.
Some will crawl across,
Some will stroll forward,
Others foolishly will march into the void,
I say only a fool would march into a void,
Nature abhors the vacuum
So I imagine,
It is a short bridge
Over a small void.
Or perhaps,
Because of nature's prejudice,
There really is not void
And life is death,
And death is life.

Mirror to My Soul

Mirror to my soul,
What magic this,
That in your eyes
I find my heart?
A song created
In the beauty of your smile.
An eternal spring
Enriching my life
Forever flowing with joy.
Mirror of my heart,
Fulfilling all I could be,
Or wish to be,
Reflecting the love
Once hidden within,
Released now
For all to see.
Mirror to my soul,
Touching effortlessly,
Moments to be held for eternity,
Eternity no longer
Measured in seconds or minutes,
But by the beating of my heart.
The measure of each breath,
Standing here
Awaiting the next reflection.
Oh priceless mirror,
Can you know as I
The image in your heart,
The vision suspended
There upon your sweet
And gentle soul?

Gently the Door Closes

Hush now,
Gently the door closes
Leaving behind the room
Steeped in sad silence.
No sounds of mirth,
Or joy remain left behind.
The illusions depart
As easily as they arrived,
Seeming to vanish effortlessly,
As if they were never there at all.
Questioning what was real,
Standing with the door
Closed tight so near,
Sealing out all that was beyond,
Dark guardian now,
Sheltering all the memories,
From the light of the day.
Does the light remain
Beyond the closed door?
Or has darkness reclaimed
Its lifeless kingdom?
A simple door,
Whose closing meant so little
And so much,
Both moments being one
And the same.
Could we possess
The wisdom to know
Both sides as they are,
The light, the joy,
The dark, the silent?
And if we could,
Would we still
Close the door gently?

Wish

A single wish can mean so much
Where care and love abound.
Looking deep within your heart
Such a treasure to be have found.

I feel the tender love you share,
It shapes all that I feel.
So when your life turns sadly,
I wish so you shall heal.

In words and heart I call to you
In dreams I wish you well.
For while our paths are different still,
Dare I free you from your cell.

While sorrow seems to be the key
Darkness holds you tight.
Endless is the flow of tears
That capture every night.

This wish to see your heart
Again so grand and strong,
And see the sorrows and the tears
That steal your life are gone.

So know your heart is precious.
Fill you all you are with grace.
Wrap your dreams in sweet love.
And leave that desolate place.

Mona Lisa

Enigmatic always,
She leaves one wondering
What mysteries lay behind
Those lips so tightly sealed.
Surely a frown it is not.
Yet is it truly a smile?
Perchance an acknowledgment,
Of days past and nights left in yesterday.
The mysteries, the questions with no answers,
All reside upon the timeless countenance
Of this woman of endless time.
Serene beauty, pained and peaceful
Both existing at the same moment,
Eyes, bottomless in depth,
Call out with cries of hurt,
tearless, but not quite empty,
Her stare lingers in your soul.
Haunting, whispering,
Never to be forgotten.
Regal in her posture,
Staring into what dreams
We shall never know.
Calm call of courage,
She beckons forever,
Hold fast these images,
Least they slip like a stone,
Into the dark silent depths,
Were love and hope despair.

Completion

Soft the moonlight dancing
Lightly upon your skin.
Peering past the panes,
An alabaster glow
Radiantly mirrors
The tracing of my touch
upon your skin.
The steady rhythm
Breaths shallow and free,
Speak of dreams
Held silently in the place
of rest you claim.
Carefully withdrawn,
Fingers still warm
Your memory lingers there.
Felt even now though
the distance grows.
Delicate caress,
Dreams remain unbroken,
The rhythm steady,
As I turn back to close my eyes,
Knowing all the time,
Completion is so near.

Sweet Embrace

What nectar this, found in the arms of her.
The closeness of her body,
The divine warmth of her arms
As they tenderly hold my soul.
The taste of her lips near mine,
A sweetness beyond the glory of any hive.
Oh sweet embrace,
Can you, I beg, not stop time from passing.
Such that we might stay thus for eternity,
How can the sky dare show its countenance
In the presence of your eyes,
No blue of nature can match
Your endless pools of wonder.
How easily I could lose forever my way there.
Sweet embrace, do not end
Do not take her arms from me now.
Let our souls stay entwined,
Let the gentle fragrance of her heart
Fill my love with its caress.
Sweet embrace,
Source of my soul's
Completion.

Companions

Just letters placed upon a page,
Strung on together hand in hand,
They gather the thoughts of heart
Spelling out emotions large and small.
Sometimes no more than the briefest
Of passing comments,
Quickly scurrying a hurried reminder
Letting us know we are not alone.
That today's fears,
Tomorrow's worries
Are not just ours alone.
Sometimes they come
In long rambling fashions,
Seemingly running on and on
Possessing a self-minded determination.
Soft surrenders to powerful passions,
Exclaimed silently in the mind's eye.
Reaching deep into the soul,
Caressing the heart with words
And loving thoughts.
These companions that trace
With unspoken elegance
The love shared between two souls.
Penned with the a devotion
Only the caring heart can command
Felt so too by the heart in need.

Your Love

Looking within I find you,
Singing gently to my heart.

Surrounded ever by your love,
Like a masterful work or art.

Beauty far beyond all bounds,
A grace to reach the skies.

Sweetness in your smile
Softness in your eyes.

Wonder never know before,
Yet so familiar still,

Like the early morning robin's song
That breaks the nighttime chill.

The warmth it brings each moment,
The joy that lights each day.

The wonder of all you are,
With me shall ever stay.

Darkness

Do not fear the darkness
Or the cold it holds so dear.
Love will carry so much warmth,
It shall light your path so clear.
A steady hand will hold you
To guide the journey strong
In this embrace find courage
For you are not alone.
Walk upon the memories
Dance there with the dreams
Do not fear the darkness
It is not what it seems.
Bravely step into this place
Destiny holds much more
Fate will step aside
When hearts dare to soar.
Cast all fear and pain away
Live within this smile
Let your eyes see all I have,
And your heart rest for awhile.

Heartbeats

The darkness gathers slowly
And hope seems far away.
Fear lurks around each corner,
As you hold the world at bay!
Your laughter once so common,
Replaced by soft worn cries,
The glow that shown so brightly,
Stolen from your eyes.
No touch near there to hold you,
In a place so all alone,
Unanswered whispers lingering
In a heart turning to stone.
Lost there in the dark of night,
When you lie with just your fears,
Pain seems to surround you,
As you hold back all the tears.
Close your eyes and listen,
For in the rythmn of your heart,
An image lives forever,
A touch that shall not part,
Warm and kind and gentle,
With words only you can hear,
Tomorrow brings the sunlight,
You have nothing there to fear.
And do not for a moment think,
Alone you walk this day
For my love shall always be there,
It is and always will be a simple heartbeat away.

Partings

With the parting, the words drifted from his soul.
There was no poetry in the silence she left behind.
Melancholy muted the melodies of his heart strings.
Slowly stealing the vibrant colors of his life.
Left behind, a dreary desolate world.
Empty pages of his soul remain without verse!
And the nights stand still in their darkness,
Filled only with the sound of falling tears.
All that remains now of forever,
Images fade over time, visions clouded with hurt.
That smile slips silently from his memory,
Like the pebble in the pond.
Slipping softly beneath the dark surface,
It's images run out, finite circles on a path to oblivion.
Ending as they must upon some foreign shore.
Yesterday's footsteps, born of air and joy,
Falling now in hard and deliberate fashion.
Stumbling blindly on, silently on,
Turning blank pages in the soulless night.
With the parting, the words drifted from his soul.
There was no poetry in the silence she left behind.

Midnight

The blackness seems ink like in hue.
This the time between today and tomorrow,
When the world lays dormant
And silence is one's vigilant companion.
Place where dreams slip past reality.
Heavy eyes struggle to see
Wondering which world is real.
It is here her touch still seems real.
Dancing softly upon your skin.
The whispers sing to your soul,
Resurrecting emotions long still.
This the place of midnight's memories,
World were moments of yesterday,
Slip into this place, the place
between today and tomorrow.

Sing Silently

Sing silently and sweetly,
do you feel my heart so near,
rest your gentle soul with me,
Let go of all your fear.
Let your head here find some rest,
peacefully lay your heart here,
to share what we know best.
No malice or uncaring words,
Can linger here within,
Only thoughts of happiness,
A new life to begin.
Fleeting though this time shall be,
The future holds much more,
Each lingering kiss so sweet,
Each opens a new door.
So rest here for this moment
Can you feel my heart so near,
Let the stillness calm your soul
Let it steal away your fears.
Some many days from here,
When wonder has found you
Hold close this precious time
Which lead to life anew.
Though but a distant memory I
For others fill your heart,
Great solace shall I know,
For I was near the start.
Sing silently and sweetly,
do you feel my heart so near?
Rest your gentle soul with me,
Let go of all your fear.

Could I Say Why it is I Love You?

Could I say why it is I love you?
No more than I could say
Why the sun's golden rays
Reflecting the spider's web fascinate me so,
As they turn the transparent dew drops
Into houses of crimsons and blues
In the early morning air.

Is it the blueness of your eyes
That even the crystal clear sky
Can never hope to match?
Or is it the way your hair gently blows
over your face
in the soft evening breeze of summer
as do the willow's branches
dance lazily in the life giving spring zephyr?

Or perhaps it is the smile
that issues forth a golden laugh
from a voice so sweet
that even the nightingale
dares not sing in its presence?

Was it the tenderness of your touch,
When you reached out to tell me,
I was not alone in those times ,
When I thought I was without anyone?

No, I cannot say why it is I love you,
Anymore than I can say why it is I know
That I shall never love another
Now that you are gone.

Dark Reflections

Here,
In my infinitesimal moment of time
I create my own purgatory.
Life of misery,
despairing hope more each day,
Seeing joy slowly dissipate before my eyes,
Feeling happiness slip past my grasping hands,
I build my own hell,
Built on pride,
Fear of trusting,
I watch you go,
Like so many others,
Too late do I realize,
It is I who am to blame,
I am the architect of this prison,
I am the guard,
I, my executioner.
More skillful hands death could not want,
Practiced in deceit,
My humanity is a vermin,
Loathed by all,
Even myself,
Yet the tragedy is
I am you,
You are I.

When Eternity Is Not Enough

The gentle nature of your heart,
Casts its sweet shadow upon me.
Dare I look so openly upon the face
Of she who commands such power?
What if upon falling deeply into her eyes
My way of the heart is lost to her?
Siren song her voice so captivating,
Pushing all other thoughts aside!
The sun captured in her hair
Radiates a brilliance beyond words.
Longing to hold her close, to touch, to caress,
That skin so fair and so very soft.
To know again the warmth
Of gentle curves molding,
Fitting so perfectly in unison against me,
As if by design this was where
She was meant to know!
How can words be found to convey
The magic of a moment beyond compare.
When a lifetime is no longer enough to share!
Rather eternity together building dreams,
When two hearts so perfectly matched
Come to find what love can truly mean.
Can one lifetime ever be enough?

Miracles

Once asked if he believed in miracles,
His cynical reply was nonsense,
The world is far too dark for such notions.
The rational mind surely knows better!
Such beliefs being the province
Solely of the weak minded,
Surely not he!
Destiny of course was not mindful of such matters,
Thrusting his world and hers
On a colliding path of such epic magnitude.
How could his rational stoic world
Explain how something so simple as a laugh,
Could render all reason meaningless.
That a smile shared in sweet silence
Could so overwhelm all senses!
That a tender touch could so fire his soul.
That the glance of her eyes his way,
Brought alive the colors of his world,
With a vibrance defying all intellect.
Once when asked if he believed in miracles,
His only reply was the sound of her name,
The softest of smiles and a whistful sigh,
Knowing how the love of her soul
So changed his world forever.

The Richness of Your Soul

When the dark is most bleak,
The air heavy with pain.

Tears blinding the eyes,
Flowing like rain.

Words fail to come
The heart seems to break.

The night finally passes
And I struggle to wake!

When there's nothing to hold,
And my dreams seem to fade,

The hopes once to bright
Now beaten and frayed.

In the stillness there comes
The softest of light.

It drifts gently here,
With promises right.

Healing the wounds
With care and sweet love,

Emotions thought lost
I could only dream of,

Breathing back life
As once again I am whole,

Wrapped here and now by
The richness of your soul.

Soulmates

It is a silent bond,
A connection between two hearts,
Distance meaningless
in its presence.
It dwells within
Magically caressing the souls.
Rising to majestic heights
When burdens grow ominously.
Pressing back against the stresses
And pains of the world.
When just a word from that one
Changes the darkness to light.
Moving beyond sorrow to joy.
Shaping the light
to glory beyond measure.
It lives for a golden touch,
Transmitting tenderness with crystal clarity.
Spoken without words
It is a calling stronger than time,
In love it finds shelter,
In love it finds life.

Eternally Entwined

It is forever here,
An invisible undefined presence
A feeling that lingers within this heart,
Never far from reach,
Comforting always,
So soft and warming
Its touch upon the very soul.
Light to the shadows,
Memory of a smile
Protecting and sheltering
In the same instance.
A sacred shared blessing,
Found upon the touch
Of the sweet kiss
When lips found
But one space to know.
Day and night
Month and year,
Passing slower now,
Yesterdays drift away,
But always this love is near.
Unrelenting in its power,
Steadfast monument
To paths crossed
When hearts eternally entwined,
Lost within another forever.

Stars

Be the stars upon my night's sky,
Lighting the darkest of times
With the brightness that is your heart.
Sharing all the burdens and pains
Within the bountiful vessel of your soul.
Sharing without hesitation
The chapters of my life,
Both joyful and sorrowful
With unquestionable understanding.
Not passing value or judgment
The quiet accepting vision
That radiates from knowing your love.
It is a quiet rapture,
Neither exorbitant
Or pretentious in nature.
A gentle current flowing
As softly as the tides.
Tracing my soul's sand
With endless serenity.
Stars upon my night's sky,
More priceless than any gem.
Shine brighter each moment
That your smile blesses my life.
